에디트프로젝트는 오는 11월 17일부터 12월 23일까지 한국 현대추상미술 발전에 선구적인 역할을 하며 한국 현대미술의 변천을 선도한 대표적 추상화가 3인 박서보(b.1931-2023), 하종현(b.1935), 이건용(b.1942)의 전시<Between the Lines>를 개최한다. 박서보는 1956년 반국전 선언의 주역으로, 1957년 국내 최초의 앵포르멜 작가로 한국 현대미술사에 각인되었다. 1970년대 이후로는 단색화의 기수로 독보적인 화업을 일구어 왔을 뿐 아니라 교육자이자 행정가로 한국 현대미술의 흐름 속에 족적을 남겼다. 무수히 많은 선을 수행하듯 반복해 그어 완성하는 <묘법(Ecriture)> 연작으로 단색화의 대표 화가로 불리며 한국 현대 추상미술 발전을 이끌어왔다. 작가는 2020년대를 기점으로 제작되기 시작한 후기 연필 묘법과 세라믹 묘법을 선보이며 별세 직전까지 끊이지 않는 탐구와 실험정신으로 묘법 시리즈를 지속해왔다. 이번 전시에는 박서보의 후기 묘법 <Ecriture No. 090622>이 소개된다.
하종현은 한국추상미술을 대표하는 작가로서 1960년대 앵포르멜 회화와 기하학적 추상, 1970년대 초 A.G.(한국아방가르드 협회) 그룹활동 등 그의 작업 세계는 한국 현대미술사의 흐름과 궤를 같이한다. 회화와 비회화의 경계에서 이뤄진 다양한 형식 실험 이후, 1970년대 중반부터 시작된 그의 대표작 <접합> 시리즈는 ‘회화란 무엇인가’에 대한 원천적인 문제의식을 바탕으로 1974년 처음으로 시작되었다. 작가는 그림의 표면에 물감을 칠한다는 고정관념을 깨고 화면 뒤에서 안료를 밀어내는 독창적인 방법으로 추상회화의 새로운 장을 열었다. 이번 전시에는 하종현의 판화 <Conjunction 19-38>가 포함된다.
이건용은 1960년대 후반부터 ‘Space and Time 미술학회(ST)’를 이끌고, ‘AG (아방가르드 협회)’그룹에 주도적으로 참여하며 당대의 전위적이고 실험적인 흐름의 최전선에 서 있었다. 작가는 1970년대부터 퍼포먼스, 조각, 설치, 영상을 넘나들며 작업해 온 한국 행위예술 선구자로, 그의 작품은 ‘예술 이란 무엇인가’에 관한 근원적인 물음에서부터 출발한다. 또한, 미술의 본질이 무엇이며 어디에 존재하는가에 대한 물음을 작가의 끊임없는 실험을 통해 그의 ‘신체’와 작품이 전시되는 ‘장소’, 그리고 그것을 바라보는 관람객에게로 이어지는 ‘관계’를 통해 보여주고 있다. 그의 대표 연작 <바디스케이프(Bodyscape)>시리즈는 캔버스 뒤에서 팔을 뻗어 선을 긋거나, 화면을 등지고 서서 손을 뻗어 선을 긋거나, 화면을 바라보고 두 팔을 휘저어 그어진 선을 통해 작가의 신체가 평면을 지각해 나아가는 과정을 보여준다. 이번 전시에서는 바디스케이프 판화<Bodyscape 76-1-2021>와 <Bodyscape 76-3-2021>를 선보인다. 이번 전시를 통해 한국미술에 내재된 고유한 정신과 조형 언어를 재료의 물성과 행위를 통해 자신만의 방식으로 해석하여 국제적으로 이목을 집중시키고 있는 주요 작가 3인의 독창적 작품세계를 조명하고, 더 나아가 한국 추상회화의 반세기 역사를 짚어볼 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있기를 기대한다.
About the Exhibition
EDIT Projects is thrilled to present the group exhibition "Between the Lines," featuring the works of three influential figures in Korean contemporary abstraction: Park Seo-bo (b.1931-2023), Ha Chong-hyun (b.1935), and Lee Kun-yong (b.1942). Renowned for their pivotal roles in shaping Korean contemporary abstract art, these artists have led the way in innovation and artistic evolution. The exhibition will be on display from November 17th to December 23rd.
Park Seobo (b.1931-2023), emerged as a prominent figure in the 1956 Anti-Kukjeon Declaration, and in 1957, he left a mark on Korean contemporary art history as the nation's inaugural encaustic artist. Since the 1970s, he has distinguished himself not only as a leading exponent of monochromatic painting but also as an educator and administrator, shaping the course of Korean contemporary art. Renowned for his Ecriture series, wherein he meticulously draws and completes countless lines akin to a meditative practice, he has been hailed as a leading figure in Dansaekhwa painting, spearheading the advancement of Korean contemporary abstract art. Park’s later works in pencil and ceramics, initiated in the 2020s, continue the Ecriture series with an enduring spirit of exploration and experimentation until shortly before his passing. This exhibition will showcase Park's late Ecriture work<Ecriture No. 090622>.
Ha Chong-hyun (b.1935) is a leading figure in Korean abstract art, whose artistic journey has significantly influenced the course of Korean contemporary art history. From his early informal paintings and geometric abstractions in the 1960s to his active involvement in the A.G. (Association of Korean Avant-Garde) group in the early 1970s, Ha has consistently pushed the boundaries of artistic expression. After conducting various formal experiments bridging the realms of painting and non-painting, his seminal series, <Conjunction>, which commenced in the mid-1970s, was initiated in 1974, centering on the fundamental inquiry of 'what is painting'. The artist challenged the traditional method of applying paint solely to the canvas's surface, introducing a new era in abstract painting with his innovative technique of pushing pigment behind the screen.
Lee Kun-yong (b.1942), a luminary since the late 1960s, has played a pivotal role in pioneering Korean performance art. As a leader of the 'Space and Time Art Society (ST)' and a prominent member of the 'AG (Avant-Garde Association)' group, Lee has continuously pushed artistic boundaries across various mediums. His "Bodyscape" series, featured in the exhibition, explores the interaction between the artist's body, the canvas, and the viewer, prompting contemplation on the essence of art and its relationship to physical and perceptual realms.
Through this exhibition, we aim to illuminate the original works of three prominent artists who have garnered international acclaim by interpreting the unique spirit and sculptural language inherent in Korean art in their distinctive ways, through the physicality and behavior of materials. Moreover, we endeavor to delve into the half-century history of Korean abstract painting.
