에디트 프로젝트는 스페이스 윌링앤딜링과 공동기획으로 조현선(b.1981) 작가의 개인전<퍼들 점퍼 Puddle Jumper>를 10월 6일(금) 부터 11월 4일(토)까지 개최한다. 전시 제목으로 사용된 ‘퍼들 점퍼’라는 단어는, 작가 노트에서도 언급하듯 물웅덩이를 뛰어넘는 강아지나 아이 혹은 아이들이 가지고 노는 물놀이 튜브의 한 종류를 뜻하기도 한다. 이는 아무런 악의도 없고 걱정도 없이 그저 즐거운 놀이로서 물웅덩이를 대하는 긍정적인 태도를 아우른다. 작가는 눈 앞의 어떤 환경 속에서 단지 유희를 만끽하고자 하는 긍정적이고 즉흥적인 아이처럼 그림을 대하고 있는 태도를 강조한다. 다채로운 색감들은 개별 색상으로서는 작동하지 않았던, 하지만 조현선의 화면 안에서 서로 겹쳐지고 병렬되는 등의 구성에 따라 비로소 서로를 부각시키고 새로운 조화를 만들어내고 있다. 작가가 선택하고 실행하는 유화 물감의 색, 유화물감의 농도, 그리고 붓질의 면적 또한 마치 색의 고유한 성격에 조응하듯 캔버스 표면 위에서 독특한 감각을 만들어내고 있다.
조현선 작가는 가위로 오려낸 듯한 비정형의 도형을 쌓아가듯 캔버스 화면 위에 색감을 배치한다. 넓은 면적을 채우는 각 단색들의 배치는 오일을 얇게 바르는 작가 특유의 기법으로 각 면의 색이 겹쳐지며 상호 영향을 드러내고, 그 층위를 고스란히 보여주기도 한다. 작가가 구성한 화면에 발린 면의 밀도감과 질감이 해당 색의 성질에 따라 미묘하게 달라지며 유희적 화면을 만들어내고 있는 것이다. 색면의 리듬감을 강조하는 조현선의 추상화는 무한한 잠재력을 보여준다. 색감이 가지는 미묘한 차이들이 만들어내는 화면에는 대상을 삭제한 상태이지만, 그렇기 때문에 특정한 대상을 지칭하지 않고 무엇인가를 향해서 가고 있는지에 대한 지속적인 시도의 과정처럼 보이기 때문이다. 이러한 화면은 모호하면서도 무수한 형태에 대해 시도할 수 있는 다양한 색채들이 입혀지면서 발생하는 차이들을 만들어내며 관객들에게 다양한 상상력을 자극한다.
작가는 미국 Sanfranccisco Art Institute (학부) 및 California College of the Arts(대학원)에서 회화와 드로잉을 전공하였다. 송은 아트큐브, 문신미술관 영상갤러리, 살롱 아터테인, 갤러리 퍼플, 라흰 갤러리 등에서 개인전을 개최하였으며, 페이지룸8, 에이라운지, 평화문화진지, 인천아트플랫폼, S om Art Cultural Center, Root Division, Gallery Heart 등 국내외 다수의 전시공간에서 열린 그룹전에 초청되었다. 참여 레지던시로는 샌프란시스코 Root Division, 파주 스튜디오 박영, 인천아트 플랫폼, 퍼플 스튜디오 등이 있다.
About the Exhibition
EDIT Projects, in collaboration with Space Willing and Dealing, is thrilled to present the solo exhibition "Puddle Jumper" by artist Hyunsun Jo (b.1981, Korea) from October 6th (Friday) to November 4th (Saturday). The title of the exhibition 'Puddle Jumper,' as derived from the artist's notes, not only signifies a type of water play tube children or dogs use to jump over or play with in puddles but also embodies a positive attitude towards puddles as a joyful play element, devoid of any malice or concern. The artist's approach to painting reflects a positive and spontaneous demeanor, akin to that of a child enjoying play in any environment. Vibrant colors create new harmonies through overlapping and parallel compositions within Hyunsun Jo's canvases, rather than harmonizing individually. The artist's unique selection and application of oil paint colors, their density, and brush strokes adapt uniquely to the canvas surface, echoing the inherent character of the colors, thus creating a distinctive sensation on the canvas.
Artist Hyunsun Jo arranges colors on the canvas as though stacking irregular shapes cut out with scissors. The placement of solid colors, filling wide areas, is a distinctive technique of the artist, where the colors of each layer overlap and influence one another, revealing the layers in their entirety. The density and texture of the applied surface on the artist's composed canvas subtly vary depending on the nature of each color, creating a playful surface. Hyunsun Jo's abstraction, emphasizing the rhythm of color planes, showcases infinite potential. The screen created by subtle differences in color tones, devoid of specific subjects, appears to be in a continuous process of attempting to move towards something without referring to a particular object. Such screens stimulate the audience's imagination by presenting differences created by various colors that can be applied to ambiguous yet myriad forms, encouraging diverse interpretations.
About the Artist
Hyunsun Jo (b.1981, Korea) completed her undergraduate studies in painting and drawing at the San Francisco Art Institute and pursued graduate studies at the California College of the Arts. She has showcased her work through solo exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Songeun Art Cube, Moonshin Museum Video Gallery, Salon Artirein, Gallery Purple, and Lahien Gallery. Additionally, She has been invited to participate in group exhibitions at various venues, including Page Room 8, A Lounge, Pyeonghwa Cultural Complex, Incheon Art Platform, Som Art Cultural Center, Root Division, and Gallery Heart. Furthermore, Jo has participated in domestic and international residencies at institutions such as Root Division in San Francisco, Studio Park Young in Paju, Incheon Art Platform, and Purple Studio. Hyunsun Jo currently lives and works in Seoul and Tokyo.
