About the Exhibition
에디트프로젝트는 2025년의 첫 전시로, 1월 21일부터 2월 22까지 소장품 전시 SURFACE 전을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 흑백을 주제로, 서로 다른 주제와 매체의 조합을 통해 각 작가 고유의 조형 언어를 탐구하는 국내외 동시대의 신진 및 중견 작가들의 작품을 선보인다. 작가들은 흑백의 표면을 넘어, 색의 대립을 넘어서서 시각적, 개념적 실험을 통해 동시대 미술의 새로운 가능성을 제시한다. 전시는 줄리안 오피(Julian Opie), 이 배, 박관택, 황수연의 작품으로 구성된다.
줄리안 오피(Julian Opie, b.1958)는 영국을 대표하는 현대 미술가로, 일상적인 대상을 독특한 조형 언어로 재해석하며 자신의 작업 세계를 구축해왔다. 사람, 동물, 건물, 풍경 등 다양한 현실적 요소들을 새로운 시각으로 풀어낸 그의 작품은, 순간의 흐름과 행인들의 특징을 결합한 예리한 관찰력에서 비롯된다. 이러한 오피의 독특한 형식 언어는 이미지가 어떻게 지각되고 이해되는지에 대한 예술적 관심을 반영한다. 회화, 조각, 영상 등 다양한 매체를 넘나들며 디지털 기술과 새로운 매체에 대한 지속적인 관심을 표출하는 작가는, 시대를 반영하면서도 그 이상의 시각 언어와 표현 기법을 모색해왔다. 그의 미니멀한 작업 스타일은 우리가 일상에서 경험하는 시각적, 공간적 요소들을 재구성하며, 고전 초상화, 이집트 상형문자, 일본 목판화에서부터 공공 표지판, 정보 게시판, 교통 표지판에 이르기까지 다양한 시각적 영감을 받아 현대적 맥락에서 재창조하는 작업을 이어가고 있다.
이 배(b.1956)는 지난 30여 년간 숯을 주요 매체로 물질성, 시간, 변화의 본질을 탐구하는 작품을 선보여왔다. 드로잉, 회화, 조각, 설치 등 다양한 형식을 넘나들며 인간과 자연의 관계를 탐구하고 숯을 통해 한국의 정신성을 세계에 알리고자 하는 작업을 지속적으로 이어왔다. 그의 Issu du feu(이수뒤푸, 불로부터) 시리즈는 절단한 숯 조각을 접합한 후 표면을 연마하여 완성한 작품으로, 숯의 거친 질감과 깊은 검정색, 숯이 가진 고유한 물질성과 형태적 특성을 강조하며 빛과의 상호작용을 탐구한다.
박관택(b.1983)은 언어적 영역과 비언어적 영역의 경계를 넘나들며 그리기와 쓰기, 보기와 읽기의 행위가 동시에 이루어지거나 교차되며 생성되는 감각적 경험을 탐구한다. 그의 대표작인 ‘일화 시리즈’는 자전적 이야기와 아날로그적 형식의 드로잉을 디지털 LED 패널과 결합한 작업으로, "아날로그 형식으로 움직이는 동작을 만들어내는 것"에 대한 작가의 관심을 반영한다. 이 시리즈에서 박관택은 얼굴의 핵심 요소인 눈, 코, 입을 단순화하고 그 불완전성을 강조하면서, 2차원 평면 드로잉에 불규칙적인 움직임을 더해 관람객이 시각적 경험을 넘어서는 공감각적 경험을 하도록 유도한다. 작품 '흉기'는 치아 교정과 이빨에서 연상된 특정 영화 속 잔인한 살해 장면을 결합하여 시각화한 작품으로, 언어와 이미지가 교차하는 지점에서 감각적 반응을 자극하며, 기존의 예술적 표현 방식을 확장하고, 감각적 경험과 그 인식의 변화를 제시한다.
황수연(b.1981)은 재료의 물리적 특성을 실험하며 변화를 시각화하는 작업을 지속해왔다. A4 종이를 연필로 반복적으로 칠하거나, 알루미늄 호일을 망치로 두드려 단단한 덩어리로 만들고 모래와 본드를 이용해 견고한 형상을 만드는 등의 작업을 통해 재료와 형상 간의 관계를 탐구해왔다. 2020년부터 이어온 <작고 날카로운> 시리즈는 흑연으로 칠해진 금속적 질감의 종이 파편들이 쌓여 날카롭고 견고한 형상으로 변모하는 과정을 포착하여 물질성과 형태의 상호작용을 실험한다.
이번 전시는 흑백이라는 공통된 주제를 중심으로 동시대 미술의 다양한 양상과 실험적 접근을 재조명하며, 각기 다른 시각적 언어와 매체를 통해 미술의 본질과 그 무한한 가능성을 심도 있게 탐구하는 기회를 제공한다. 흑백은 단순한 색의 대비를 넘어서, 작품들 간의 시각적 긴장감과 개념적 깊이를 이끌어내는 중요한 기제로 작용하며, 이를 통해 관객들에게 색과 형태, 빛과 그림자, 물질성과 감각에 대한 새로운 통찰을 제공한다. 작가들이 제시하는 독창적인 형식과 개념적 실험은 단순히 미학적 경험을 넘어서 관객들에게 시각적, 감각적 확장을 유도하고, 동시대 미술의 새로운 방향성과 실험적 잠재력을 탐구하는 장을 마련한다.
About the Artist
줄리안 오피 (Julian Opie)
1958년 영국 런던에서 태어난 줄리안 오피는 1982년 골드스미스 대학 졸업 후 현재까지 런던을 기반으로 활동하고 있다. 전세계 유수의 미술관에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 주요 전시 기관으로는 중국 창사 망고뮤지엄(2023), 일본 도쿄 파르코 미술관(2022), 중국 선전 허 아트뮤지엄(2022), 포르투갈 리스본 베라르도 현대미술관(2020), 일본 도쿄 오페라 시티 아트 갤러리(2019), 부산 F1963(2018), 호주 멜버른 빅토리아 국립 미술관(2018), 영국 런던 국립 초상화 미술관(2017), 수원시립미술관(2017) 등이 있다. 현재 작가의 작품은 영국 런던의 테이트 모던, 영국 박물관, 빅토리아 알버트 미술관, 국립 초상화 미술관을 비롯, 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA), 보스턴 ICA 미술관, 도쿄 국립현대미술관, 예루살렘 이스라엘 박물관 등 세계 주요 기관에 소장되어 있다.
이 배
1956년 경북 청도 출생의 이 배는 홍익대 회화과를 졸업 후 현재 한국과 프랑스를 오가며 작업을 이어가고 있다. 전 세계의 박물관과 기관에서 개인전을 통해 소개되었으며 주요 전시로는 제 60회 베니스비엔날레의 공식 연계 부대 전시로 개최된 이탈리아 베니스의 Wilmotte Foundation(2024), 뉴욕의 록펠러 센터 채널가든(2023), 캐나다 몬트리올의 Phi Foundation(2021), 대구의 인당미술관(2022), 이탈리아 베니스의 Wilmotte Foundation(2019), 인천 Paradise Art Space(2018), 프랑스 생폴 드 벤스의 Fondation Maeght(2018) 등이 있다. 그의 작품은 프랑스 파리 기메 박물관, 스페인 쁘리바도 알레 그로 재단, 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 리움미술관, 마그파운데이션을 포함한 국내외 주요 미술관에 소장되어 있다.
박관택
박관택은 1983년 서울에서 태어나 서울대학교 서양화과와 동 대학원을 졸업하고, 미국 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아트 SVA(School of Visual Arts)에서 순수미술 석사 학위를, 컬럼비아대학교에서 Teachers College, Art and Art Education 과정을 마치고 박사 졸업했다. 주요 개인전으로는 씨알콜렉티브(2024), 인천아트플랫폼 (2021), 경기도미술관, (2020), 소마미술관 (2019), 인사미술공간 (2019) 등이 있으며, 영국의 사치 갤러리(2020), 러시아 에르미타주 미술관(2020), 뉴욕 두산갤러리(2018)등 에서 열린 그룹전에 참여했다. 또한, 난지미술창작스튜디오(2021), 인천아트플랫폼 레지던시(2021), 경기창작센터(2020), 국립현대미술관 고양레지던시(2019)에서 입주 작가로 활동했으며, 현재는 서울대학교 서양화과 교수로 재직 중이다.
황수연
황수연은 1981년 서울에서 태어나 2007년 서울과학기술대학교 조형대학 조형예술학과 학부 졸업 후 2010년 서울과학기술대학교 일반대학원 조형예술과에서 석사를 취득했다. 주요 개인전으로는 학고재 디자인 프로젝트 스페이스(2021), 두산갤러리(뉴욕, 서울 2019), 금호미술관(2017) 등이 있다. 휘슬(2024), IAH Seoul(2024), G Gallery(2024), 원앤제이(2022), 서울시립 북서울미술관(2022), 아트선재센터(2021), 세마(SeMA) 벙커(2020), 국립현대미술관(2019), 두산갤러리(2019), 금호미술관(2019; 2015; 2013) 등의 단체전을 통해 소개되기도 했다. 또한 작가는 국립현대미술관의《젊은 모색 2019》에 선정되어 주목 받았다. 난지미술창작스튜디오(2021), 뉴욕의 두산레지던시(2019)에 입주해 작업했다.
About the Exhibition
EDIT Projects is pleased to present SURFACE, its first exhibition of 2025, running from January 21 to February 22. This exhibition explores the theme of black and white and brings together a select group of contemporary artists—both emerging and mid-career—from Korea and abroad. The works in SURFACE go beyond simple color contrast, exploring the boundaries of formal language and the broader possibilities of contemporary art. Featuring artists such as Julian Opie, Lee Bae, Park Kwantaeck, and Hwang Sueyon, this exhibition highlights a diverse range of practices and media, providing a sophisticated platform for new forms of artistic experimentation.
Julian Opie (b. 1958) is a prominent British contemporary artist, celebrated for reinterpreting everyday subjects through a distinctive visual language. His work spans people, animals, buildings, and landscapes, reflecting his sharp observational skill and ability to capture fleeting moments and the unique characteristics of passersby. Opie’s formal language explores the ways images are perceived and understood. Working across various media—including painting, sculpture, and video—he engages with digital technologies and new media, constantly pushing the boundaries to develop visual languages and techniques that both reflect and transcend their time. His reductive style invites a sensory experience of the world around us. Drawing influence from classical portraiture, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Japanese woodblock prints, and public signage—such as information boards and traffic signs—Opie connects the modern visual language of daily life with the enduring principles of art history.
Lee Bae (b. 1956) has dedicated over three decades to exploring the material and transformative properties of charcoal. Spanning drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation, his practice engages with the complex relationship between humans and nature, while consistently conveying the spiritual essence of Korea on the global stage. The Issu du feu (From the Fire) series, created by joining and polishing cut pieces of charcoal, emphasizes the material’s rough texture and profound blackness, while also exploring its interaction with light.
Park Kwantaeck (b. 1983) explores the sensory experiences that arise at the intersection of linguistic and non-linguistic realms, where the acts of drawing and writing, seeing and reading occur simultaneously or overlap. His 'Anecdote Series' combines autobiographical narratives with analog drawings and digital LED panels, reflecting his interest in creating movement within an analog format. In this series, Park simplifies the essential features of the face—eyes, nose, and mouth—emphasizing their inherent incompleteness. By introducing irregular movements into the two-dimensional drawings, he invites the viewer to transcend the visual experience and engage in a synesthetic encounter. The work "Weapon" visualizes a specific scene of brutal violence from a film, inspired by dental braces and teeth, stimulating sensory response at the intersection of language and image.
Hwang Sueyon (b. 1981) has consistently explored the physical properties of materials, visualizing their transformations through her artistic practice. Her work investigates the relationship between material and form by repeatedly layering graphite on A4 paper, hammering aluminum foil into solid masses, and creating sturdy structures using sand and adhesive. Since 2020, her Sharp and Small series has captured the transformation of graphite-coated, metallic-textured paper fragments as they accumulate into sharp, solid forms, experimenting with the interaction between materiality and shape.
This exhibition explores the diverse aspects and experimental approaches of contemporary art through the common theme of black and white, offering an opportunity to delves into the essence of art and its limitless possibilities across various visual languages and media. Black and white, beyond their simple contrast, serve as a pivotal element that fosters visual tension and conceptual depth among the works, providing audiences with fresh insights into color and form, light and shadow, and materiality and perception. The artists’ distinctive formal and conceptual explorations transcend mere aesthetic experiences, inviting viewers to broaden their visual and sensory engagement while establishing a platform to investigate new directions and experimental potential in contemporary art.

Julian Opie
Born in London in 1958, Julian Opie has been working in the city since graduating from Goldsmiths College in 1982. He has held solo exhibitions at major art institutions worldwide, including Mango Art Museum in Changsha, China (2023); Parco Museum in Tokyo, Japan (2022); He Art Museum in Shenzhen, China (2022); Berardo Museum in Lisbon, Portugal (2020); Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Japan (2019); F1963 in Busan, South Korea (2018); National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia (2018); and the National Portrait Gallery in London, UK (2017), among others. Opie’s works are included in the collections of prominent institutions such as Tate Modern, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, as well as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
Lee Bae
Born in 1956 in Cheongdo, South Korea, Lee Bae graduated from Hongik University’s Department of Painting and currently works between Korea and France. He has held solo exhibitions at various museums and institutions around the world, including the Wilmotte Foundation in Venice, Italy, as an official collateral event of the 60th Venice Biennale (2024); Channel Gardens at Rockefeller Center in New York (2023); Phi Foundation in Montreal, Canada (2021); Indang Museum in Daegu, South Korea (2022); Wilmotte Foundation in Venice, Italy (2019); Paradise Art Space in Incheon, South Korea (2018); and Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France (2018). His works are part of major collections, including the Guimet Museum in Paris, France; the Privado Allegro Foundation in Spain; the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Leeum Museum of Art in Korea; and the Maeght Foundation in France.
Park Kwantaeck
Born in 1983 in Seoul, Park Kwantaeck graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Western Painting and later earned an MFA from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York. He also completed a doctoral program in Art and Art Education at Columbia University’s Teachers College. Park has held solo exhibitions at CR Collective (2024), Incheon Art Platform (2021), Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (2020), SOMA Museum of Art (2019), and Insa Art Space (2019). He has participated in group exhibitions at Saatchi Gallery in the UK (2020), the State Hermitage Museum in Russia (2020), and Doosan Gallery in New York (2018). His residency experiences include the Nanji Art Studio (2021), Incheon Art Platform Residency (2021), Gyeonggi Creation Center (2020), and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Residency in Goyang (2019). He is currently a professor in the Department of Western Painting at Seoul National University.
Hwang Sueyon
Born in 1981 in Seoul, South Korea, Hwang Sueyon graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Seoul National University of Science and Technology in 2007 and obtained a master’s degree from the same institution in 2010. Her major solo exhibitions include Hakgojae Design Project Space (2021), Doosan Gallery (New York and Seoul, 2019), and Kumho Museum of Art (2017). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues such as Whistle (2024), IAH Seoul (2024), G Gallery (2024), ONE AND J. Gallery (2022), Seoul Museum of Art (2022), Art Sonje Center (2021), SeMA Bunker (2020), the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (2019), and Kumho Museum of Art (2019, 2015, 2013). Hwang was selected for the Young Korean Artists 2019 exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. She has participated in artist residencies at the Nanji Art Studio (2021) and the Doosan Residency in New York (2019).
