애드리안 니에베스는 1982년 미국 텍사스 주 샌안토니오에서 출생했다.
시각 예술가이자 작가(writer)인 애드리안 니에베스는 미국 공군에 복무했으며 비영리 예술 단체와 예술 매거진의 창립자이다. 니에베스는 10년 이상의 경력을 가진 미술가로, 독학으로 회화를 공부하여 독특한 화면을 구사한다. 작가는 정신과 상담사의 권유로 2011년 산후우울증과 이후 진단받게 된 양극성 장애의 치료를 위하여 회화를 예술 치료의 수단으로 사용하기 시작했다. 초기에는 어린 시절의 감정 억제, 특히 정서적 억압의 영향을 극복하기 위해 추상 표현주의 회화를 활용하는 실험을 진행했다. 조안 미첼Joan Mitchell, 사이 톰블리Cy Twombly, 버니스 빙Bernice Bing, 그리고 알마 토마스Alma Thomas부터 메리 러브레이스 오닐Mary Lovelace O'Neal까지 초기 흑인 추상화 작가로부터 영향을 받은 니에베스의 그림은 자신과 관람객들에게 고요한 성찰과 명상을 위한 공간을 제공하고 있다. 작가는 글쓰기와 시각적 요소 모두 자신의 목소리를 찾는데 도움이 되었으며, 동시에 오랫동안 내재된 감정을 안전하게 해방시킬 수 있는 공간을 만들어낼 수 있었다고 말한다. 그녀의 학제간 실천은 트라우마가 우리의 삶을 통해 정체성을 어떻게 형성하고 변화시키고 재정의하는지를 드러내는 신체적, 후성유전학적, 심리적, 사회적 정서적 영향에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 그녀의 직관적인 작업 과정은 주로 과거와 현재의 기억, 감정, 경험에 의존한다. 니에베스는 종종 그녀의 내면의 진실과 기억을 전달하고자 신체적 움직임과 음악에 따라 한 번에 그림을 완성한다. 추상적인 형태와 구성, 표현적인 표식을 통해, 그녀는 적응, 회복, 치유 및 변화의 내부 생물학적 및 감정적 과정에 시각적 형태를 부여한다. 니에베스의 작품은 흑인(아프리카계 미국인), 퀴어, 신경다양성 등을 지닌 존재들의 모든 면면이 어떠한 응징이나 비난도 받지 않고 드러날 수 있는 공간을 조성하고 점유할 수 있도록 한다. 이처럼 스스로의 자아를 작가 뿐 아니라 다른 이들도 함께 표현할 수 있도록 독려하는 공간이 되기를 희망한다.
2018년, 니에베스는 테세라 아트 콜렉티브(Tessera Arts Collective)를 설립했다. 이 비영리 단체는 유색인종의 여성 및 다양한 성정체성을 가진 추상예술가들을 위해 설립되었다. 니에베스의 회화는 최근에 캐나다 밴쿠버의 레니 미술관(Rennie Museum), 미국 샌안토니오의 스퍼스 컬렉션(Spurs Collection), 한국의 제주도의 포도뮤지엄, 중국 베이징의 당샤 아트 스페이스(Dangxia Art Space)를 비롯 미국, 캐나다, 유럽 및 아시아 지역의 공공 기관 및 개인에게 소장되었다.
A’Driane Nieves was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1982.
A visual artist and writer, A’Driane Nieves is a U.S. Air Force veteran and the founder of an arts nonprofit and art magazine. Nieves is a self-taught painter of over a decade. At the urging of her therapist, she began using painting as a form of art therapy in 2011 during her recovery from postpartum depression and following her later diagnosis of bipolar disorder. This initial experimentation led to her using abstract expressionist painting as a way to overcome the impacts of childhood abuse, specifically emotional suppression. Influenced by Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombly, Bernice Bing, and early Black abstractionist painters ranging from Alma Thomas to Mary Lovelace O’Neal, Nieves’ paintings offer space for her own and others' quiet reflection and contemplation. She credits both the writing and visual components of her practice with helping her to find her voice and creating space for her to safely release long-buried emotions.
Her interdisciplinary practice focuses on the physical, epigenetic, psychological, and social-emotional impacts of trauma—inherited, historical or ancestral, personal —exposing how it shapes, alters, and redefines identity over the course of our lives. Her intuition-driven process draws heavily on memories, emotions, and experiences from both the past and present. Nieves often completes a painting in one sitting, relying on physical movement and music to channel her inner truths and rememberings. Through abstract forms and composition and expressive mark-making, she gives visible shape to the internal biological and emotional processes of adaptation, recovery, healing, and transformation. Nieves' work allows her to carve out—and take up—space where the fullness of her humanity as a Black, queer, neurodivergent woman can be expressed without retribution. It is her hope that holding space in her work to express her fullest self encourages others to do the same.
In 2018, Nieves founded Tessera Arts Collective, a not-for-profit serving women and non-binary abstract artists of color. Nieves' paintings are on view at public institutions and in private collections across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Her work was recently acquired by the Rennie Museum in Vancouver, Canada, Spurs Collection in San Antonio, USA, Podo Museum, Jeju-do, South Korea and Dangxia Art Space in Beijing, China.
